What a fun day we had for our first day of the first session of Camp Amica 2012! All the "amicas" enjoyed seeing each other again and we had 4 new faces! We played a fun ice breaker game where we got to learn fun facts about our "amicas"!
Our theme this week is "Around the world in 3 days".....and our first trip out of Richmond after we got our passports was to.....
COLOMBIA!
We were very fortunate to have a good "amica" of mine come to camp today to lead our discussion about Colombia. She and her husband are both from Colombia. Everyone agreed that Colombia is on their list of places to visit one day....it is breathtaking!
We started off learning facts about Colombia....some of the fun facts are:
Colombia is the only country in South America that has access to both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans; 70% of the flowers in the United States are imported from Colombia; Colombia does not have seasons, because it is near the equator and it has sunlight throughout the year; experts believe that 3,000 out of the 14,000 species of butterflies are found in Colombia.
We looked at amazing pictures of Colombia and the beaches are breathtaking!!!!
While we were watching our slideshow we enjoyed a delicious Colombian snack, Guava Roscon. It is basically a guava paste wrapped in a pastry....yum! Some "amicas" really enjoyed it, some thought it was ok and two did not like it at all. At least everyone tried it!
After the slideshow we answered our question of the day in our journals. It was interesting to see where everyone would like to travel to one day....moms and dads I have some great ideas for you....and I don't think they will be too alarming!
Our first craft was making the Colombian Flag out of tissue paper. The Colombian Flag is yellow, blue and red.
Since we learned that there are believed to be around 3000 different kinds of butterflies from Colombia, our second craft was making butterflies. This activity required some extra drying time, so we will finish these up in the morning.
While I was getting ready for lunch, the "amicas" used their story cubes to create a story where they were given the first sentence....Attention all passengers, flight 716 is ready to board.
The "amicas" were in for quiet a treat with lunch! We made Chicken Empanadas and had mango, papaya and plantain chips....so yummy!!!!
After lunch the girls were able to try on traditional dance clothes from Colombia. My "amica's" daughters were our beautiful models all morning!
Everyone really enjoyed our taste of Colombia and were sad to say goodbye. We all need to get a good night's rest tonight as we move on tomorrow morning to a country that is close to our camp name....that is "Amica"!
