Today my last camp of the summer started. I had 12 girls and two were new amicas! One of our newest amicas also has Rett syndrome like Anna Cate. It was incredibly sweet to see all my amicas embrace her too just like they do with Anna Cate!
We started off learning some fun facts about our friends....my amicas really like playing this ball ice breaker game. Then we talked about how today our week was called Mystery week in the sense that I am not telling them what we are going to do each day....it is a surprise! Today our "mysteries" were going to be more science experiments. We broke up into three groups to work as I found this worked really well at my last session.
Two of our experiments were experimenting with vinegar and baking soda. The first one each amica chose a food color and dropped a few drops onto a spoon. Next they covered the spoon with baking soda. They already had a cup of vinegar poured out for them, so once their spoon was covered, they dropped their spoons into the vinegar and stirred it around a little. What came next was BUBBLE, FIZZ and POP! Before the amicas dropped their spoons in I asked each group to tell me what they thought was going to happen. Group 1 said it was going to make a fizzing sound and explode and that the liquid would become thick. Group 2 said it was going to make a hissing noise, bubble up and explode and it was also going to be thick. And Group 3 said it was going to get bubbly, fizzy explode and make their hand stand up (I think they really wanted this to happen) and it was going to be thin.
They were all right....it fizzed, popped, got bubbly (this was the extent of an explosion), it was not thick, but still remained the same consistency. My amicas learned that mixing baking soda and vinegar create an acid based reaction and the two chemicals work together to create a gas...carbon dioxide.
The second experiment with baking soda and vinegar also included blue glitter, causing a sparkly explosion! We filled a small vase with 3 Tablespoons of baking soda, then added 7 drops of food coloring of their choice and then they quickly poured in a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Then up came the sparkly explosion! The same overall reaction was the same as the experiment above as we still used baking soda and vinegar; however, the glitter added the extra sparkle! I love some of the expressions I captured below!!!
Then they kept adding to the mixture to see if what they could create! Group 1 added an equal amount of salt and black pepper and lots of spaghetti. What happened to their mixture was the bottom was full of all the baking soda, the middle hand a band of glitter and the top of full of their spaghetti. Group 2 added lots of pepper, a little salt and a few noodles and their mixture turned into glittery sand! And Group 3 added small, but equal amounts of salt and pepper and their mixture just turned completely blue and stayed the same watery consistency.
The third experiment that we did was called absorbing science. First I showed them where I placed five color dots from a magic marker equally spaced apart on a paper towel. I then placed the paper towel in some water and we watched the water walk up (aka being absorbed into) the paper towel. Before I placed it in the bucket of water I asked them what they thought was going to happen. My amicas said that all the colors would bleed together or all the colors would drip into the water or the colors would bleed straight down on the paper towel. The results were that the as the water crawled up the paper towards the dots, the dots started rising because the towel is absorbing the water and taking the ink with it! Then I accidentally dropped the paper towel into the bucket and not only did the dots continue to rise, but some ink ended up this time in the water creating a tie-dyed look!
After I showed them this little experiment they broke back up into their groups and did their own absorbing! We filled one cup of water and stirred in some food dye (they picked their color), rolled up a paper towel and placed one end in the cup of colored water and the other end in an empty cup next to it. It was neat to watch the colored water travel up the paper towel and make its way into the empty cup...it should have ended up that both cups would eventually have the same amount of water, but it was taking a long time....but we did see water slowly go into the empty cup! The last step of this experiment was to fill two cups of different color water, put an empty cup in between them and roll two paper towels up. One paper towel would go in the blue water with the other end in the empty cup and the other in the yellow water with the other end in the empty cup. As the colored water was absorbed and made its way into the empty cup the blue and yellow waters would combine to make green water! This too took some time, but we did come back and look and yes there was green water in the middle up!
After lunch we had some time so we went on a scavenger hunt! My amicas enjoyed some outside time since it rained earlier in the morning. We didn't have time to go over what we found so we will do that first thing in the morning!
