Our first experiment this morning for one group went BUST! I completely bought the wrong product and we would still be waiting for the experiment to work! Off to the store tonight so we can do it before our guests arrive tomorrow. Luckily, I had "extras" planned in case we had more time, so we still had plenty to keep us busy!
The first experiment today that EVERYONE did was we made our own lip gloss! This was not only fun, but messy too! Each little batch turned out a slightly sweet, candy flavored lip gloss! Here were the ingredients: 1 teaspoon of paraffin wax; 4 teaspoons of coconut oil; 4 teaspoons petroleum jelly; 4 white or pink (we used pink) candy melts; 1/2 teaspoon oil based candy flavoring (we had a choice between cinnamon, peppermint, cherry or creme de menthe....no one picked the last one!).
All my amicas started with their own snack size baggy filled with a teaspoon of the paraffin wax that I had pre-grated for them. Then they added the coconut oil, petroleum jelly and candy melts and the flavoring. Then I placed the bag in a bowl of very hot and allowed the ingredients to melt together. We also had to massage the bags too. My amicas then snipped a corner from the bag and squeezed the ingredients into small containers. We placed our lip gloss into the freezer for a little bit too! The girls LOVED making this!!! And they smelled so yummy!
Our second experiment today was working with Aqua Gems. Aqua Gems are liquid beads made out of polymer that absorbs, stores and releases water. We had so much fun with these gems!!!! I had to place the small beads in water last night so they would be ready for my amicas today! They start out as hard little dots and then turn into soft marbles! When they are in a bowl of water they disappear and just look like blots of color; however they loose their shape. But as soon as you put your hand in the water to grab them out, they come out round again! As long as they keep moist, they will keep their shape!
We answered our Question of the Day in our journals and had lunch together a little earlier today as my amicas were hungry! After lunch they broke out into their groups to use the Story Cubes and create their Story of the Day. This allowed me to get the kitchen back into order so I could get ready for our last experiment!
Lastly we did an experiment called Blow it Up! We were exploring gas again with baking soda and vinegar, but this time added balloons into the mix. My amicas took turns filling an empty water bottle with a 1/3 of vinegar through a funnel. Using another "dry" funnel they poured baking soda into a balloon filling the balloon approximately 1/2 way. When they were ready, they attached balloon carefully to the water bottle, making sure NONE of the baking soda leaks into the bottle. As soon as it was attached, they carefully lifted the balloon letting the baking soda fall into the vinegar. We watched as the mixture fizzed, bubbled and expanded the balloons! The gas that was created by the baking soda and vinegar is what filled the balloons up! They had so much fun and one even popped! When they filled their balloons some wanted to tie them to play with, some wanted not tie them but let them go, and other kept doing the experiment over and over again! After two days of working with vinegar, my house smells like we have been coloring Easter eggs!
Tomorrow will be a fun day where my amicas will get to participate with BRICKS for KIDS!!!!! I am super excited to experience first hand this new program coming to Richmond!
